I Can't Work Anymore.
I Can't Read Anymore.
I Can't Go Out Anymore.
I Can't. . .
Have you or anyone you know ever said these things
because of vision loss? The Iowa Department for the Blind can help you gain control of
your independence, develop your self-confidence, and give you the tools you need to do
what you want.
Are you having trouble doing daily tasks? At no cost to you, we can help you learn the techniques and find the tools you need to live independently, manage your home, and be as active as you want in your community.
We can show you how to thread a needle, cook your favorite foods, balance your checkbook, use a computer, and walk safely wherever you want to go.
Independent Living Program. For older, retired Iowans or Iowans with a secondary disability, the teachers from the Independent Living Program teach skills that allow these individuals to complete daily tasks, like cooking and cleaning, and enjoy their hobbies like sewing and reading. They also help them deal with their vision loss.

Is vision loss preventing you from working? With the right skills and tools, you can keep the job you have or find a new one. We can help you get the education and training you need, and we can help you find a job. If you need special equipment to perform your job, we can help with that too.
Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors. The vocational rehabilitation counselors visit an individual's home to provide skills training and help in dealing with vision loss. Other programs include GED preparation and college preparation. Department counselors also offer career counseling and can help find employment.
