The tutorials use keyboard instruction and include keystrokes and
strategies for your screen reader. Step-by-step exercises give you hands-on experience
using your screen reader with the application. The topics covered in the tutorials are
similar to those taught in classes offered by commercial training companies. You can order
a tutorial on cassette tape or electronically on disk.
The number of tapes you will receive for each tutorial varies widely. Most tutorials are recorded at slow speed (15/16 isp). You cannot play the tapes using a standard cassette player, like a walkman or stereo cassette player. If you need the special player, contact the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). They can put you in touch with your local lending library. The NLS phone number is (202) 707-5100; their e-mail address is nls@loc.gov.
In addition to the tapes, you will receive a disk that has exercise
files and the tutorial files. The tutorial files will be in three formats: ASCII Text,
Word, and a Braille Intermediate file. You may use these files for reference or to produce
a Braille or large print version of the tutorial.
When you order an electronic tutorial, you will receive a disk containing the tutorial files, a Setup.exe file, and a Readme.txt file.
The Readme.txt file includes instructions to run the Setup.exe file, and it lists the files that the Setup.exe file copies to your computer.
The Setup.exe file is an executable file that
automatically creates the C:\Assist\ folder on your computer and copies the exercise and
tutorial files to that folder. You will receive the tutorial files in three formats -
Word, ASCII Text, and a Braille Ready File (BRF). These files make up the electronic
version of the tutorial. You can open and read the Word or ASCII Text files in your word
processor (WordPad, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, or Corel WordPerfect). The Word files
are formatted for large print. You can use the Braille Ready File (BRF) to produce a
Braille version of the tutorial. (You do not need a Braille translation program.)
Tutorials on cassette tape range in cost from $35.00 to $50.00.*
Tutorials on disk cost from $25.00 to $40.00.*
